One thing that’s very important to oil filter performance is the build quality. An oil filter has different components that must be sturdy under hot and cold conditions. The quality of these materials determines how well the filter can provide clean oil or just oil pressure back to your engine. With the silicone drain back valve and a wire-backed full synthetic media, the Wix XP oil filter passed the quality test as these materials operate well under hot and cold oil pressures. You don’t find a lot of glue as some oil filters use. Glue can hold sections together, as you see in the image below but this can be a contaminant for your oil. 

Flow rate

The Wix XP oil filter can filter out particles in the range of 20 – 70 microns while lasting 5,000 – 7,000 miles. That’s very tiny, considering you can only see particles above 40 microns. The Wix XP oil filter can do this and keep oil pressure up at the same time. While the competition offers information about how many miles the filters last, Wix XP doesn’t seem to publish any info.

Conclusion

Quality oil filters are just as important as oil changes. Although the oils and filters these days can last up to 10 and 20,000 miles, you shouldn’t let it get that far. It’s generally a good idea to replace these parts every 3,000 – 5000 miles for optimal engine performance and lifespan. Also when hopping from an OEM filter to an aftermarket or branded filter it’s good to match up the oil inlet holes to make sure it is at least similar to the manufacturer’s recommendation. This is to make sure your oil pressure stays consistent. The driver’s manual has all the info you need when it comes to oil and filter specifics, so staying as close to those specs as possible is generally a good idea.
